Biography

Marc Barry Elrich was born in Washington, D.C. in 1949, and his family moved to Forest Glen ten years later. He attended Montgomery County public schools, earned a BA in History from the University of Maryland and, later, a Masters in Teaching from Johns Hopkins University.

Marc raised his family in Takoma Park: a daughter (Jamie) and a son (Joshua), both graduates of Blair High School, and two foster sons, Doug and John. He now has three grandchildren--Mehalia, Kai, and Annika.

As a 5th grade teacher at Rolling Terrace Elementary, Marc has been a strong supporter of decreased class sizes and school modernization. Marc has called for a rethinking of the current school curriculum that he believes de-emphasizes the need for children to learn real content. He decries the continuing gap between minority and majority students as unacceptable, and blames, in part, the low expectations of the county curriculum.

Marc has been elected ten times to the Takoma Park City Council, which oversees a budget of $19.3 million. Takoma Park is a full-service city and has its own library, housing department, police service, public works, recreation facilities, waste collection, and recycling program, to name a few of services it provides independently of Montgomery County. As the representative of the city's Ward 5, Marc has been tireless in his efforts to help solve problems faced by his constituents. In recent years he has championed the city's efforts to make affordable, safe, and high-quality rental housing available, and has worked to help tenants purchase and become owners of their apartment buildings.
